Whilst many of us are celebrating the relaxation of some of the lockdown restrictions which will allow us to visit restaurants and pubs there is also disappointment that public pools remain closed. Swim England is calling on the Government to explain the science behind the decision. Chief executive of Swim England, Jane Nickerson, explained “We have been working with the Government throughout June as part of their preparations for step three reopening. There was no indication that swimming pools would not be opened alongside the other businesses listed in step three and we have not been given a reason since the announcement." Our friends at the Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group have worked tirelessly to bring the right advice and guidance to the pool industry. The most recent technical paper is 'Swimming pool technical operation after Covid-19 shutdown' and is part of a series of PWTAG Technical notes addressing the current pandemic. This note deals with the ongoing challenge of managing a swimming pool during a subsiding pandemic. It provides a framework of good practice, and is recommended by Swim England as part of their Return to Pools Guidance which was published ahead of the easing of the lockdown measures announced earlier this week. Olympic gold medallist Adam Peaty is one of several athletes to lend their support to the #OpenOurPools campaign and there is mounting pressure on the Government to allow public pools to re-open by mid-July. |
